The reason I lean more towards offsite backup is to prevent data loss to
due physical damage of a backup drive, cd etc. All those are good
storage mediums. However,

What happens if :

1) Somebody steals your external drive?
2) In event of fire or any other damage to the place where backup drive,
cd etc are kept?
3) The recommendation that you should store the media in lock box adds
one more manual step which people can easily skip.

All the above problems are alleviated if you we use offsite backup.

The use of an off-site storage solution assumes one of the following:
a) An alternate machine functioning satisfactorily is available
b) The sole machine has been recovered to a point where Internet connectivity is restored.
Given the plummeting cost of on-site storage, what is your opinion of having a backup drive?
